You Can’t Always Get What You Want!

Things can change in an instant. One minute, everything is rolling along smoothly when BAM…out of the blue, something unexpected happens. Just like you need insurance in the event of an accident, every organization needs an effective crisis communication plan.

In this day and age news is released, re-tweeted, shared on facebook and blogged about instantly. Before a story can hit the evening news or newspaper, chances are we have already read about it through social media. Are you prepared to have your story shared? Some think because they are a small organization that they don’t have a need for a crisis communciations plan. This is a lie. No matter how small, or how big, what people say about you matters. We talked about perceptions in a previous post, and how important they are to the growth and stablilty of your organization. Perceptions can be changed quickly during a crisis.

Be prepared. One of the best ways to do this is to stay true to your core values. Make sure that your employees are properly educated on, and believe in those values. In the event of a crisis, they can be your best advocates! As soon as a crisis hits, know the facts and communicate them through as many channels as possible. Be aware of, and listen to what is being said about your organization through social media. Respond quickly and truthfully, honesty is respected even if it means admitting you were wrong, and apologizing. This makes your organization more real and your audience will relate.
